Ramotar keen on strengthened relations with Jamaica

President Donald Ramotar has congratulated Jamaica’s Prime Minister designate Portia Simpson-Miller on her recent victory at the polls, while indicating an interest in strengthening friendly relations.

“On behalf of the Government and people of the Republic of Guyana, and on my own behalf, I wish to convey warmest congratulations to you on your election as Prime Minister of Jamaica,” Ramotar wrote in a letter to Simpson-Miller, dated December 30th and which was released by the Government Information Agency (GINA).

“I take this opportunity to wish you every success in your endeavour to lead Jamaica towards further economic growth and prosperity. It is also my sincere desire that during your tenure in office the friendly relations that have characterised the interaction between our two countries will be strengthened both at the bilateral and regional levels,” he added, while asking her to accept the assurances of his highest consideration.

At Thursday’s polls, the People’s National Party (PNP) sent the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) back into opposition after scoring a crushing 41-22-seat victory. Simpson-Miller, 66, had previously served as prime minister after taking over from P J Patterson, who retired in March 2006.
