The nude body of a 40-year-old woman was yesterday discovered at the Zeelugt Cemetery and it is suspected that she was strangled after being attacked by a homeless man known to many in the village.

Dead is Afrozie ‘Lizzie’ Ali, 40, of Lot 56 Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo. Her suspected murderer, ‘Sonny’, is currently being sought by police.
According to the woman’s brother, Aftab Ali, she left home on Saturday afternoon sometime between 5:30pm and 6:00pm but failed to return.
He stated that yesterday, around 10:30am, ‘Sonny’ approached him and told him of his sister’s demise and asked him to accompany him back to the cemetery to ascertain the woman’s identity. Shaken up by the news, Ali said he was unable to go to the site but instead asked some other relatives to go and identify the body which was allegedly discovered by `Sonny’.

“She was found naked… none of her clothes was in the burial ground, only her underwear was not too far away from her. Her foot was sprawl and her whole inside come out,” the woman’s sister explained.

“Her neck was swollen, her nose was bleeding and her forehead buss up like she get hit to she head and her face was blue…she get strangle like,” another relative noted as she opined that the woman was strangled with her underwear.

Family members all expressed frustration at the police’s inability to capture ‘Sonny’ after several attempts made yesterday. “Just now them went after him and he run away…he keep running all the time. They can’t catch him onto now. If ya na know something about somebody, wa you ah run for?” the sister asked.

They related that the woman’s death came as a shock since she was a very friendly and kind person to everyone in the village. They noted that their 70-year-old mother’s health took a drastic turn for the worse after she received the news of her daughter’s sudden death.

“… she deh upstairs in bed, it is very hard, she ah cry hard, hard…if you see her, it’s a pity,” one sister noted. The woman is also survived by her four children, ages 20, 19, 18 and 11.

Relatives and persons who were present keeping wake for the deceased said that the suspect is known to be a drug addict but was never violent towards anyone.

“We nah gon take it so easy, we nah gon drop it so,” relatives stated.

The Leonora police station is investigating the matter and police in a press release stated that they are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination.
