Slain Blankenburg woman laid to rest

A week after Rushelle Rodney was found with her throat slit and stab wounds about her body, she was laid to rest at the Victoria cemetery while her murderer remains on the run.

Rodney, 32, was found on January 17 with her neck and both wrists slit and also several stab wounds to her back, stomach and chest. One of her two children made the discovery around midday at their Lot 72 Boodhoo Housing Scheme, Blankenburg, West Coast Demerara home.

A post-mortem examination performed on the body showed that she died as a result of multiple stab wounds and a slit throat.

Her husband, Shawn Rodney, who is implicated in the murder, has since contacted the woman’s relatives and reportedly took responsibility for the crime and also indicated that he is in Suriname.

The dead woman’s father, Allen Thomas, indicated to this newspaper that Rodney’s employer will soon stop its operation and is expected to pay out severance packages to its employees. He believes Shawn will avoid police capture and, as a result, will not be punished for the crime he is thought to have committed. The woman’s relatives reiterated their need for justice even as she was laid her to rest.
This newspaper understands that the couple was engaged in an argument, during which the woman locked the man out of the house. After continuous knocking and pleading, she opened the door and the man ran in. It is believed that once inside, the man used a knife to cut her throat and inflict the other wounds. It was reported that several knives were used in the attack.

According to a police statement, the woman’s body was found in the kitchen of the house and three blood-stained knives were found at the scene.

The man made his escape in a vehicle along with a six-year-old boy. The child arrived safely at the home of relatives about three hours later.

The vehicle was found abandoned on the public road at Carlton Hall, Mahaicony, on the East Coast of Demerara.
