Couple charged with selling ganja to undercover cop

Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry remanded a couple who allegedly sold cannabis to an undercover police officer, when they yesterday appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer to the charge.

The court heard that on Friday, at West La Penitence, Robin and Claudette David allegedly sold two grammes of cannabis to a police lance corporal. The couple, of Lot 49 West La Penitence, pleaded not guilty to the charge of trafficking narcotics when it was read to them.

Prosecutor Jairam Luckhai told the court that on the said day, acting on information, a police corporal went to the defendants’ residence where he presented a marked $500 bill to Robin David to buy the narcotic.

After receiving the illegal item, the lance corporal identified himself as a police officer in plain clothes. The court was told that the other accused was also present during the transaction.

The couple was later taken to the Criminal Investigation Department headquarters where the suspected narcotic was weighed in their presence.

The couple was ordered to return to court on February 1.
