Court told man sold ganja to undercover cop

A man who allegedly sold 32 grammes of cannabis to an undercover police officer also had another narcotics charge levelled against him and his wife when they appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

It is alleged that on February 11 at Diamond, East Bank Demerara, Melissa Beverly and Roderick Robertson had 36 grammes of cannabis in their possession. They pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to them by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

Robertson was further charged with selling 32 grammes of cannabis to an undercover police officer. The man denied the charge when it was read to him.

He stated: “I don’t sell weed. De officer came at meh business fu buy weed and I tell he I don’t sell it and he ask meh fu get some for him. Is then I know he is a police officer. I get set up, I don’t sell weed.”

The other defendant also said that she does not smoke cannabis and is innocent of the charge levelled against her.

In narrating the police facts to the court, Prosecutor Jairam Luckhai said that on the day acting on information, the lawman went to Diamond public road where he met the accused who sold him a quantity of narcotics valued $3,500. After the man was finished vending the cannabis, Luchkai added, the police officer arrested the accused, told him of the allegation and escorted him to the police station. The item was weighed in the defendant’s presence.

The court heard that on the same day the police went to the defendant’s Diamond Squatting area residence where a search was conducted and 32 grammes of cannabis was discovered in a black plastic bag.

After listening to the prosecution’s case the magistrate remanded the duo to jail. The matter will be called again today.
