Sophia man knifed to death, brother in custody

A 19-year-old man was knifed to death yesterday morning at his Lot 619 ‘A’ Field, Sophia home after a minor altercation with his younger brother.

Dead is Sherwin Kennedy who suffered a single stab wound to the left side of his chest allegedly at the hands of his 17-year-old brother. The brother is now in custody.

When Stabroek News visited the home, the boys’ grandmother, Esther Kennedy, said that an argument ensued between the two after the younger sibling asked to borrow Sherwin’s clothing to attend court this morning.

According to her, the two would have such arguments frequently but never to this extent. The woman related that it was around 10:00 am when she was at the back of her house, which is in the same yard as the boys’ home, when she heard the commotion.

“I was at de back there and dey mother was here and we talking so I go to wash some eschallot and I heard them arguing and I tell the mother hear they got problem over there so she left and go over and she asked them what is the problem and he exact words was `mommy talk to Sherwin because I gon kill Sherwin’ and she left and come inside,” the woman said tearfully.

Esther said that from her verandah, she saw the 17-year-old pick up a kitchen knife and throw it towards Sherwin who then staggered through the door and fell at the bridge leading out to the dam.

The knife suspected to have been used in the murder

“He take the knife and he pelt it straight at him and it hit he straight to he heart, I see my grandson come to the door staggering and I see a big hole in his chest… I call he mother quick and tell she `watch blood!’”, the traumatised woman said.

The boy’s mother, Joan Kennedy, rushed him to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he subsequently died.

While this newspaper was at the scene of the murder, police had not yet investigated the area and the alleged murder weapon was displayed by relatives.

Sherwin was employed in the interior and relatives described him as a very jolly person who always kept them laughing. He leaves to mourn seven siblings.
