Woman doesn’t wish to testify against man accused of snatching her gold chain

A 19-year-old man accused of snatching a woman’s gold chain while she was sitting in a car was placed on $20,000 bail when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The charge which was read by Magistrate Hazel Octave- Hamilton stated that on February 10 Brian Greenidge who resides at Lot 9 South Ruimveldt stole a gold chain valued $115,000 from Karen Morris.

In presenting the police facts Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield said that on the day of the alleged incident the VC was sitting in her vehicle when the accused confronted her and snatched the chain she was wearing.

The woman, the prosecutor added, raised an alarm and a  public-spirited citizen detained the man. He was later arrested and charged, the prosecutor said.
The prosecutor told the court that the VC gave a statement to the police indicating that she did not wish to proceed with the case.

The magistrate then asked the prosecution why the man was brought before the court to answer the charge.

She said further  that the prosecution should have sought advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP)  to determine whether or not the accused should have been charged.

Mansfield then made an application to seek such legal advice.  The matter will be called again on March 9 for report and fixture.
