Repairs start on East Bank Berbice road

Residents of East Bank Berbice are relieved that the repairs to the road, over which they protested last week, have commenced as promised by Regional Chairman David Armogan.

This newspaper passed through the area on Saturday and observed that Nauth Construction Company, based at Heatburn, had started to fix the huge potholes in that vicinity.

The residents told this newspaper that they “welcome the early intervention to alleviate the problems” associated with the deplorable state of the road.

They noted that vehicle owners were “suffering tremendously over cost of maintenance and schoolchildren missing out instructional periods due to late arrival in the mornings.”

Hazrat Husain, regional councillor for A Partnership for National Unity, told this newspaper that “from all indications, the work seems to be of acceptable standard”.

He said though that he hopes the regional officials would pay more attention to work to ensure that it is done according to specifications and that residents would be satisfied.

Husain, who is also from the area, acknowledged that “millions of dollars are being invested in drainage and irrigation on the East Bank Berbice; many people are going back to the land.

“There is need for the road to be of good standard so farmers can bring out their produce without any hassle; due to the lack of transportation.”

Armogan told Stabroek News the road repair was just a “small project” being done through the Ministry of Public Works.

He said he had made representation for the ministry “to assist with the situation” so as to “bring some level of comfort” to residents, in the meantime.
