Shot St Rose’s girl can’t have bullet removed just yet

The St. Rose’s High School student who was on Wednesday evening shot and robbed of her cell phone in Thomas Street, Kitty will have to remain with the bullet lodged in her arm indefinitely since surgery now may cause further damage.

Sasha Gilhuys’ father Lester yesterday told Stabroek News that after consultations with several doctors he was informed that should the girl undergo surgery now she runs the risk of being permanently handicapped in the left hand. He explained that because of the critical positioning of the bullet between vital nerves and tissues doctors indicated that the best option was to wait until the bullet moved to the surface just below the skin. They did not give a timeline of how long it takes for the bullet to surface but said Sasha’s next doctor’s appointment is on the 21st of March.

Meanwhile the girl will remain on pain killers. She said that she is feeling little pain at the moment. It is only when someone touches the arm or she accidently hits it that the pain becomes excruciating. She will be returning to her form five classroom on Monday.

The girl was shot a short distance from where she takes Spanish after-school lessons, in Thomas Street, Kitty, as she was following a friend to get transportation home. She had said that she was approached by a man on bicycle who demanded her Samsung cellular phone. Nearby, two accomplices on bicycles waited. Her attacker seeing her shocked response reached into a knapsack, pulled out a gun and shot her in the left arm.

A report was made to the police and investigations are ongoing.
