Finance Ministry holds workshop to improve project monitoring, evaluation

The Ministry of Finance on Monday started a five-day workshop which aims to strengthen government’s monitoring and evaluation systems with the view to improving public financial management.

The workshop attracted stakeholders from the education and health ministries, the New Guyana Marketing Corporation and regional executive officers, the Government Information Agency (GINA) said.

In his address, Minister within the Ministry of Finance Juan Edghill said well-functioning and cost-effective monitoring and evaluation systems are critical to the successful design and implementation of government programmes and policies.

He also noted that in its manifesto the PPP/C had highlighted the need to strengthen monitoring and evaluation capabilities in the wider context of its commitment to improving public financial management. It also plans to institutionalise monitoring and evaluation across central government bodies through training.

GINA said the ministry’s monitoring and financial division is being guided by a five-year plan and it is currently in its second year.

Monitoring and evaluation systems are important to project development and can be an effective way of providing feedback on ongoing projects.
