Nigerian cocaine trafficking accused remanded

A Nigerian national who is accused of being in possession of cocaine  for the purpose of trafficking  at the Springlands, Berbice backtrack crossing was remanded  yesterday by  Magistrate Hazel Octave-Hamilton in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Sulaimon Adeboye Adelodun is  accused of having in his possession 21.748 kilogrammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking on Monday at No. 78 Village Corentyne.

The accused who was unrepresented by an attorney chose not to make a request for bail.

The prosecutor who then appeared uncertain about how to proceed was advised by the magistrate that all he had to do was to request that the defendant be remanded.

Adelodun pleaded not guilty and said that he was not given a chance to see a lawyer so that is why he took that position regarding  bail.

He was reportedly intercepted by ranks of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) on Monday with 21 kgs  of cocaine as he was about to leave Guyana backtrack for Suriname.
Adelodun is scheduled to appear again in court on May 17.
