US Coast Guard pulls off major drug bust in Caribbean

(Jamaica Gleaner) The United States Coast Guard says it has captured a speedboat laden with US$43 million worth of cocaine in the Caribbean Sea.

The US Coast Guard says it seized 3,532 pounds of cocaine. Four suspected smugglers were also arrested, however their nationalities have not been revealed.

The Coast Guard has hailed the seizure as a major drug bust in its latest collaborative regional effort called Operation Martill. The operation aims to block US-bound drug shipments far from American shores.

The multi-agency campaign has teamed up with regional law enforcement agencies, as well as with the Defense and Homeland Security departments to track down drug, weapons and cash smugglers in the coastal Caribbean region of Central America.
