Accused in Stabroek Market chain snatching remanded

A man accused of snatching another man’s  gold chain  at the Stabroek Market was yesterday refused bail by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to face a larceny from the person charge.

Jevon Sampson is accused of stealing  from the person of Hemchand Dyndyal  one gold chain valued $168,000  on Wednesday.

On the day in question Dyndyal was wearing his chain at the Stabroek Market when Sampson allegedly ran past and snatched it.

Dyndyal who was with his cousins  gave chase and caught Sampson sitting in a route 41 minibus.

Police Prosecutor Denise Booker told the court that a piece of the chain was recovered in Sampson’s right hand while the other part was discovered on the ground nearby.

Sampson pleaded not guilty and in his defence the unrepresented man told the court that he was running to get a bus on the park and when he got there he was told that it was too full so he sat in an empty bus where Dyndyal’s cousin came and started beating him.

The prosecution objected to bail on the grounds that he is a flight risk and the offence is prevalent in the area. The next hearing is scheduled for April 30.
