Corentyne mother and son brutalised in $1M robbery

Three unmasked armed bandits attacked and robbed a family of Number One Road, Corentyne on Thursday night of over $1 million in cash and jewellery.

Omawattie Prettipaul told this publication that the armed men rushed into her yard just before 8 o’clock. They directed her not to speak but she shouted for her son, Ravo, who was the only family member at home with her at the time. Because she called him, one of the men hit her with his gun and she lost consciousness for about ten to fifteen minutes.

Her son said he responded to his mother’s call and came face to face with the bandits, who collared him and took him upstairs. The bandits broke open the wardrobe door with the gun, ransacked it and took the cash and jewellery.

The perpetrators returned downstairs and demanded more money, but Ravo did not respond to their request so they hit him with the gun.

By this time, Omawattie regained consciousness and realised that she was tied up with her clothes. They men continued to ask for more money and threw a gun at the woman, point a cutlass at her and threatened to kill them both.

She said she told them where the money was and her son brought it to them. After the money was handed over, they told Ravo to lie on the floor and they tied him up and escaped. Omawattie received a chop to her ears and kicks to her abdomen from the men.

Ravo said that he later got up went and called for the neighbours who gave their assistance. They said police arrived some half an hour later. When Stabroek news arrived at the scene this morning police officers were seen conducting investigations.
