Guyanese man held in big Jamaica cocaine bust

(Jamaica Gleaner) A man who attempted to leave the island with cocaine valued at J$9 .5 million is under investigation by detectives from the Trans National Crime and Narcotics Division.

The Customs Department said the 24 pounds of cocaine was found in a video game belonging to man, who was slated to board a flight at the Norman Manley International Airport yesterday.

Customs said the man was travelling on a Guyanese passport.

It said he initially cleared customs with a laptop bag and a suitcase and exited the baggage hall.

However, the Customs department said the man later returned to the baggage hall claiming that he had left a third bag.

It said the bag was located and scanned.

Customs said anomalies were detected in the bag and it was forwarded to the Trans National Crime and Narcotics Division office at the airport for further investigation.

The man was taken into custody.

He reportedly told investigators that he was paid US$5,000 to transport and deliver the cocaine.
