-driver in custody

Police yesterday found 10 kilogrammes of cocaine in a car at Moleson Creek, Corentyne, Berbice that was departing for Suriname.

Up to press time last evening, the driver was in police custody and according to police officials he will soon be facing charges.

According to a police press release, around 8:30am ranks stopped and searched the car, which was bearing licence plate PHH 2564, at Moleson Creek, during which the cocaine was found.

Crime Chief Seelall Persaud, when contacted, disclosed that the driver was heading for Suriname at the time of the bust.

Stabroek News was reliably informed that the cocaine was found hidden in the driver’s side door after police conducted a thorough search of the vehicle.

From all indications, the driver was alone when the search was conducted. Up to late last evening, the car was impounded at the Springlands Police Station as police continued their investigation.
In recent years there have been several large drug busts on the Corentyne. There have also been some interceptions at Moleson Creek.

Last November, four persons were held by police after ranks stopped a motor car and subsequently unearthed a total of 10 kilogrammes of cocaine.  The driver of the vehicle, who was the only occupant at the time, managed to drive away but police pursued the vehicle which crashed at Line Path, Skeldon. The driver escaped.

The car was taken to the Springlands Police Station, where a search revealed the prohibited substance. Subsequent investigations lead to the arrests.

Last month Jaikarran Singh made a court appearance after he was allegedly found with 12 kilogrammes of cannabis at Moleson Creek. He was in a minibus when the police conducted a search on the vehicle and allegedly found the drugs. Singh, who was charged, is currently a prisoner on-remand.
