Dr Rupert Roopnaraine to deliver 2012 Martin Carter Memorial Lecture

Prominent scholar-politician Dr Rupert  Roopnaraine has agreed to deliver this year’s Martin Carter Memorial Lecture  which is scheduled for the Umana Yana on Thursday, June 28.

Now a significant event on the annual calendar of the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport,  the lecture is regarded as a prestigious literary and cultural contribution by the ministry which issued the invitation to Dr Roopnaraine as Distinguished Guyanese Scholar, Intellectual and Literary Critic, the ministry  said in a press release.

And in an innovative departure this year, the lecture will be preceded by a screening of “The Terror And The Time”, a documentary on the political events of the mid-seventies.

This will set the tone for the lecture itself which is to be titled “From the Terror And Time To The Poetry Notebooks: Encountering Martin Carter”.

Dr Roopnaraine  who has already written on Carter (1986)  graduated from Cambridge University (Modern Languages) before proceeding to Cornell for an MA and PhD in Comparative Literature.   He has also lectured in universities  in the United Kingdom, Canada, the US and Guyana, the release added.
