Ministry gets US$95,000 in seeds from Food for the Poor

A variety of vegetable and flower seeds were donated to the Ministry of Agriculture by Food for the Poor (Guyana) Incorporated in the boardroom of the Non- Governmental Organization last Wednesday.

The quantity of seeds donated amounts to approximately one 20-foot container which will significantly assist the country’s agricultural drive and boost production.

The donation valued at US$95,000 ($1.9M) included twenty bags and nine buckets of mixed vegetables, fifty mixed packets, one hundred Swiss chard and one hundred bags Santa Maria vegetables.

Senior Manager Kent Vincent spoke about the excellent relationship that exists between Food for the Poor and the ministry and expressed gratitude for the technical assistance received from the livestock section of the ministry and the Guyana School of Agriculture, especially with poultry rearing.

Speaking on behalf of the ministry, Minister within the Ministry of Agriculture, Alli Baksh, described Food for the Poor as probably the most vibrant NGO in the Caribbean and said that the vital donation of agricultural seeds would certainly enhance the government’s “Grow more campaign” drive.

He assured that the seeds will definitely reach those who really need them, while Dr. Oudho Homenauth, Chief Executive Officer of NARI described the donation as timely and explained that the seeds would be distributed according to the needs of the regions.
