GCCI floats civil society observer role in gov’t, opposition dialogue

President of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) Clinton Urling has suggested that civil society be involved as observers to the tripartite talks between government and the parliamentary opposition parties.

According to a press release, Urling made the suggestion when he, GCCI’s Chairman of the Security and Governance Committee Silas Brummell and GCCI’s Immediate Past President Komal Ramnauth met with the chairman and executive members of the Alliance For Change (AFC) on Tuesday to discuss the current political climate. The AFC team comprised Khemraj Ramjattan, Cathy Hughes, Dominic Gaskin, David Patterson and Valerie Garrido-Lowe.

Urling, the release said, noted that the uncertain political climate does not foster a productive business environment and prosperity. He also said he supported the continuous dialogue between the government and the opposition.

The AFC explained its parliamentary activities since the start of Parliament and provided justification for its decisions and actions. The party also indicated its willingness to continue engagement and deliberations with the government on issues including local government elections, the make-up of the integrity commission, NICIL, budget cuts and others. These issues will be addressed when tripartite talks continue, the release said.

The GCCI already held discussions with the government to discuss this issue.
