15-year-old miner dies in cave-in

A 15-year old boy of Bonasika Creek, Essequibo River died on the spot when a mining pit caved-in on him at Mahdia yesterday morning.

Reports are that around 9:30am, Majeed Sam was working at a dredge at the Red and White Hole backdam on the outskirts of Mahdia when the cave-in occurred.

According to the police, Sam was rushed to theMahdia District Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Stabroek News was told that Sam was working with his father at the mining operation when the incident occurred. Reports are that yesterday morning Sam and three other miners were in the 40-foot deep pit when the sides of the crater starting to crumble. His colleagues managed to scamper to safety while he was buried under the mud. Using an excavator and other mining equipment, the miners pulled the teen’s body out close to an hour later.

He was rushed to the hospital at Mahdia but according to resident of the mining community, the young man was already dead.
His parents were making arrangements to have his body brought to the coastland yesterday afternoon.
