Squatters in M&CC Drury Lane house, a nuisance to residents

A dilapidated house which sits on a property belonging to the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) is now home to a couple, said to be vagrants, and their two-month-old baby and neighbours are concerned about their presence there.

According to Andrew Ramcharran, who lives next to the property, which is located at the corner of Middleton Street and Drury Lane, Campbellville, the duo and young child took up residence at the house about two months ago and have become a complete nuisance to residents.

“We are fed up with this thing. All the ‘F’ and ‘S’ and he is beating her all day,” the frustrated man said.

Ramcharran explained that he has spoken to various officers within the M&CC to no avail. “I talk to the City Council two weeks now… the Chief Constable said he cannot do anything,” he said while adding that the mayor has advised him to call in the police.

“I said this is your property and he agreed to send someone. This is their property and they can’t do anything about it? This man beating this woman and cussing up whole night! We can’t sleep! Government employees just sit down and when 4:30 in the afternoon come, they put down they pen and gone. Imagine if people can’t fix a little thing like this, much less anything else?” he questioned.

When contacted, Mayor of Georgetown Hamilton Green said he is investigating the matter and has since been told by the Town Clerk that the City Engineer would have to look into the case. He said anyone found living on the property would immediately be removed.

There was also some amount of concern about the well-being of the infant having to live under such crude circumstances but efforts made to contact officials of the Child Care and Protection Agency on Friday proved futile.
