Ramkarran mum on resignation

Former PPP Executive Member Ralph Ramkarran yesterday declined  to comment on his shock resignation from the party over the weekend.

Approached while on the corridors of the High Court, the Senior Counsel and former Speaker of the National Assembly opted to divulge little information on his recent decision.

Asked by members of the media if he had had time to look at the apology issued by the PPP on Sunday, he responded “No, I haven’t looked at anything. I was playing with my grandchildren all weekend”.

Further quizzed on if he would revisit his decision, Ramkarran told reporters “No I have absolutely nothing to say. I am not saying anything”. When asked if he would be glad to return to the party which he had been a part of for almost fifty years, he chuckled and walked away.

Ramkarran on Saturday handed in his letter of resignation to President Donald Ramotar after what was dubbed an explosive Executive Committee meeting on June 29. Fiery debates at the meeting were sparked by comments made by Ramkarran in the PPP-aligned Mirror Newspaper on the issue of corruption.

The party has since said that it is hoping that Ramkarran reconsiders his decision as efforts are being made reconcile. The party stated that the member who made the offending remark to Ramkarran has since apologized.

The party described Ramkarran as a longstanding and highly respected member stating that he had made very valuable contributions to the party and the country as a whole.
