Enmore man charged over shallow grave murder

Joel Persaud was yesterday remanded to prison after being charged with the murder of 51-year-old Gangaram Bharrat, whose body was found buried in a shallow grave in the his backyard on Tuesday.

Persaud, 26, of 14th Street Foulis, East Coast Demerara, appeared at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Nyasha Hatmin yesterday. He was not required to plead to the capital charge.

The accused was remanded to prison and the matter is expected to be called again on July 31 at the Cove and John Magistrate’s Court.

Bharrat, known as ‘Bumpy,’ a farmer of Lot 399 10th Street, Foulis Enmore, East Coast Demerara, had been missing since Friday last and was last seen drinking in the company of the Persaud at his home, four corners away from where Bharrat lived.

Relatives reported the matter and further insisted that police accompany them to the 14th Street house, which was found locked up and deserted. Upon further checks at the back of the yard, they noticed that some of the soil was disturbed and they decided to dig and this led them to the discovery of Bharrat’s body.

Bharrat was buried yesterday.
