Vagrant stabbed to death in money row

-assailant in custody

A vagrant was stabbed to death early yesterday morning during a row for money owed by him to another vagrant, a short distance from where eyewitnesses said he went to purchase illegal drugs.

Dead is Wendell Freso, 35, called ‘Country,’ who was stabbed shortly before 4am yesterday morning, on Alexander Street.

Police have said that that Freso, whose address they gave as Yarrow Dam, Ruimveldt, was involved in an argument with another man over a sum of money, during which he was stabbed to his chest and abdomen. The suspect has been arrested and remains in police custody, where he is assisting with investigations.

Stabroek News visited Yarrow Dam but was told by residents there that no one by Freso’s names ever resided there.

At the scene of the murder, persons were tight-lipped about what had happened, explaining that they “don’t want any problems with the drug people.”

However, an eyewitness told Stabroek News that both of the men did odd jobs at the nearby Bourda Market. He said that judging from the argument, Freso owed his assailant monies and he wanted it to “go into the drugs yard.”  He said that from his vantage point, he was not sure what Freso was stabbed with but saw him fall to the ground. No one provided assistance in getting the man to the hospital as he lay in the spot he fell until police arrived sometime later, when there was a further wait before he was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
