Wharf worker dies after artery severed in forklift accident

A 50-year-old foreman attached to John Fernandes Limited (JFL), Water Street died around 10 pm on Friday as he was about to go into surgery at the Georgetown Hospital after sustaining a broken leg when he was hit by a forklift at his workplace around midday on Friday.

Uland Cummings of Sisters Village, West Bank Demerara died from a severed artery as a result of the accident, the police have stated in a press release. Details surrounding the accident are sketchy but a source from the company stated that Cummings was standing on the wharf when the forklift hit him on his leg. After being hit, his leg appeared to be broken and he was panting for breath as persons rushed him to the Georgetown Hospital.

While at the hospital, Cummings was in need of blood and as doctors was searching for his pulse he died due to organ failure, the source stated. Relatives of Cummings refused to comment on his death when this newspaper contacted them yesterday.
