Harbour Bridge reopens to light traffic

The Demerara Harbour Bridge (DHB) this afternoon reopened to light vehicles

General Manager Rawlston Adams at a news conference, this morning, stated that approximately 95% of works are completed on the section of the bridge that collapsed, on Monday morning, and heavy vehicles will be able to begin traversing the bridge by tomorrow at noon.

He added that they are currently still working to install the permanent pontoon at the section that collapsed and approximately 50% of that work is complete. He stated that the works team has been working on a round-the-clock basis to ensure the bridge is back to its working status.

A small portion of the bridge sank on Monday morning making the bridge unusable. There was chaos on both sides of the river on Monday and Tuesday as passengers scrambled for speedboats. These were permitted to operate all-day as long as they were equipped with navigation lights.
