Enterprise man, 78, charged with stabbing murder of step-son

Enterprise, East Coast Demerara resident Albert Andries, 78, was yesterday arraigned on a murder charge, based on the allegation that he stabbed his stepson to death.

Andries of Lincoln Street, Enterprise, appeared at the Mahaicony Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Judy Latchman, who read him the capital charge, to which he was not required to plead. He was remanded to prison and will make his second court appearance at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court on August 30.

Andries is accused of the fatal stabbing of Lakeram Persaud, 34, of Lincoln Street, Enterprise, which occurred last Friday morning.

Police had said investigations revealed that Persaud was involved in an argument with his stepfather, during which it is alleged that he was fatally stabbed to his chest with a knife.

Persaud’s mother, Ramkumarie Manbahal had told this newspaper that the two men had been having disputes for years, before the fatal confrontation in the bottom flat of the Enterprise house last Friday morning. She said that as her son was lying on the floor bleeding, Andries changed his clothing and walked out of the house saying that he was heading to the police station. Neighbours, who were alerted by Manbahal’s screams, contacted the police so that as Andries was preparing to leave the yard he was held.
