Prisoner fined after being caught with drugs

A New Amsterdam Prison inmate found with a quantity of unlawful drugs on Monday was on Monday fined $6,000 with an alternative of serving two extra weeks in prison.

Seon Benjamin, of Rosignol stelling road, West Coast Berbice, who had in his possession 2.5 grammes of narcotics on February 10, was fined by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo after he changed his plea to guilty.

The court heard that a search was conducted by prison officers that unearthed a piece of white paper containing white substance which appeared to be a narcotic.

However, Benjamin told Magistrate Nagamootoo that he found the substance in the prison compound and was going to use it for self-pleasure. He then apologised to the court for the offence.
