East Canje man shot in home invasion

Fort Ordnance, East Canje resident Rishiram Singh was shot on Monday night by a gang of men that invaded his home and robbed him and his family of cash and jewellery.

Singh, 32, is now a patient at the New Amsterdam Hospital, where he is being treated for pellets now lodged in his right leg.

No one was arrested up to press time for the robbery, which was carried out by seven masked men, who were armed with shotguns, cutlasses and knives according to Singh.

The injured man told Stabroek News that the attack occurred around 11pm, when he was in the bath in his yard. His dog started barking and Singh investigated and saw two persons in black clothes, one of whom jumped his fence.

As a result, Singh ran upstairs and locked the door, which the men later fired on. “When meh run upstairs dem (bandits) start fire shot on the glass door and meh ducked ah get up meh get up backed and the shot ketch meh,” he related.

The bandits then ran upstairs and fired another shot, Singh said, adding that the men hit him with the gun in his head and demanded a gold chain that he had recently sold. The men also beat his wife and placed a knife to her neck while demanding cash and jewelry, he added. . Singh went on to say that the bandits made off with about $14,000 in cash as well as jewellery.

Singh said that after the attack, he drove himself to the New Amsterdam Hospital, where he was admitted. No neighbour rendered assistance to him after the crime was committed, he noted. When Stabroek News spoke to several residents, they related that they were too afraid to leave their houses after hearing gunshots.

According to Singh it was the first time he had been robbed. He had previously been warned about going home late and as a result he had installed lights around his house. However, he added, the bandits destroyed all the lights that were outside. Singh believes that his attackers had him under surveillance.
