Taxi-driver stole $100,000 from Brazilian

Taxi driver Devaen Jacobis was yesterday charged with stealing $100,000 belonging to a Brazilian national.

Jacobis was placed on $70,000 bail when he appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Jacobis, of 570 Onderneeming, West Bank Demerara, pleaded not guilty to a simple larceny charge that on August 6, at Georgetown, he stole $100,000, property of Ari Swidersk.

Attorney Gordon Gilhuys, who represented Jacobis, said that on the day of the offence, his client was working and he picked up two persons and later dropped them off. Sometime after, the lawyer said, police arrested and charged his client, who knew nothing about the charge.

In an application for reasonable bail, Gilhuys said that his client had no antecedents, posed no risk of flight and had a fixed place of abode.

The prosecution had no objection to counsel’s bail application and bail was set.

The matter will be called again on September 25.
