Haslington market tarmac handed over

The $14.9M Haslington market tarmac which will reportedly benefit over 1,000 residents in the Haslington and Golden Grove communities, East Coast Demerara, was handed over on Thursday by Minister in the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development Norman Whittaker, a press release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) said.

Minister Whittaker handed over the tarmac documents to Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) councilor Dhanpaul Sukhdeo in the presence of vendors and residents.

During his address he explained that the idea of having tarmacs across Guyana is to reduce the incidence of roadside vending and provide a healthy environment for consumers to make their purchases, the release stated.

He said further that in most of the communities where tarmacs are being installed, they can be used for many purposes, including church and cultural activities.

“This is an investment, whether this is useful, whether this is a good investment or not will depend in large measure on the use to which we put this area,” Minister Whittaker was quoted as saying.

He also urged the market committee to manage and maintain the tarmac in a structured way and challenged the members to make optimum use of it so as to  help generate income to build a washroom facility.

Recently several other tarmacs were handed over in Regions 2, 3 and 4, with a few more slated for Region 5, the release added.
