Driver to face charge over death of Ann’s Grove biker

The driver of the car involved in the accident which claimed the life of Orlando Augustus on Saturday remained hospitalized up to press time last evening and police indicated that he would be charged once he is discharged from the hospital.

A police source told this newspaper that no one has come forward to report that a woman was the actual driver of the car when the accident occurred. The official said that the man is insisting that he was sitting behind the wheel when the car collided with the motorcycle that Augustus was riding.

The driver had rushed Augustus, 22, to the Georgetown Hospital shortly after the accident but he was pronounced dead on arrival. The man told police at the hospital that he was on the Railway Embankment preparing to turn onto Conversation Tree Road when Augustus slammed into the side of his car.

It was shortly afterward that the man complained of feeling unwell and, after receiving treatment in the Accident and Emergency Unit, he was admitted to the institution. No one can say what the nature of his illness is.

Meanwhile Augustus’ father Lancelot told Stabroek News from his Ann’s Grove, East Coast Demerara home that a post-mortem examination revealed that his son died from a fractured skull. He said that the only information he has received from police so far is that the driver of the car was still in hospital.
