Sales manager charged with causing death of biker

Jan Verwey, a sales manager, was yesterday arraigned on a charge of causing the death of biker Orlando Augustus by dangerous driving.

Verwey, 32, who appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, was released on $350,000 bail, after the prosecution said it had no objection to him being granted his pre-trial liberty.

The allegation against Verwey is that on August 25, at Conversation Tree and Railway Embankment, he drove motor car PNN 6496 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Augustus.

The accident occurred around 7:30 pm on Saturday night, when Augustus’s motorcycle collided with a motor car at the corner of Conversation Tree and the Railway Embankment. Augustus, 22, of Ann’s Grove, East Coast Demerara, who was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Hospital, died as a result of a fractured skull.

Attorney Ronald Burch-Smith, who appeared for Verwey, stated that his client was driving west of the Conversation Tree junction and Augustus, who was riding a motorcycle, collided with his vehicle.

Burch-Smith told the court that after the accident Verwey took Augustus to the hospital, holding him at the back seat of the car while a female occupant drove the car.

Burch-Smith, who said he knew his client personally, said he is of noble character and had no previous matters in the court before.

Verwey will make his next court appearance on October 4, in Court One.
