Violence used in BlackBerry theft – court hears

A 24-year-old vendor accused of robbing a man of his BlackBerry cell phone and using personal violence was on Friday granted bail in the sum of $100,000 when he appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The allegation against Kellon Bishop is that on August 21 at Georgetown, he robbed Basil Blackman of one BlackBerry cell phone valued $30,000 and at the same time, or immediately before or after the said robbery, used personal violence to the said Blackman.

The accused who resides at 87 Hunter Street, Albouystown was not required to plead to the indictable charge of robbery with violence when it was read to him.

Attorney Adrian Thompson who represented the accused made an application for his client to be admitted to reasonable bail, arguing that there was a “dispute’ with the complainant identifying his client as the alleged perpetrator of the offence.

Counsel in his bail application stated also that his client has no previous convictions or pending matters before the courts, poses no risk of flight since he does not own a passport, has a fixed address; and has been cooperating with police investigations.

According to Thompson, Bishop will eagerly return to court whenever required to do so as he is anxious to clear his name of the charge.

The prosecution had no objections to the accused being granted his pretrial liberty,  but attached conditions,  requesting that he reports to the Alberttown Police Station every Friday at 9:00 am.

His matter will be called again on October 5.
