Injured family in Greene accident recovering

The East Canje, Berbice family members who were involved in Friday morning’s West Demerara  accident are recovering slowly from their injuries at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH).

The driver of the car, Raheem Kaleem, 45, along with the other occupants, his sons Reeaz Kaleem, 18 and Fawaaz Kaleem, 15 and Zaitoon Hoosein, 26, all of Canefield, East Canje, sustained injuries and were taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRH) following the accident in which former Top Cop, Henry Greene and 10-year old Shaffiya Jamalludin lost their lives.

The Kaleems’ relatives told this newspaper yesterday that the injured men remain in a stable condition at the GPH. They said that Raheem‘s condition improved yesterday. The man and his sons Reeaz and Fawaaz are patients at the Male Surgical Unit of the GPH and relatives who were many in number at the GPH yesterday expressed hope that they will soon return home to Berbice.

Relatives said that Zaitoon Hoosein remains in a more serious condition. The woman, who is the mother of Jamalludin, sustained serious head injuries as well as a broken jaw. They said that yesterday the woman was recovering slowly as doctors continue to monitor her condition.

The family members were travelling along the West Coast Demerara public road in the vicinity of Harlem when the accident occurred. The occupants of a Bakewell truck which was also involved the accident recalled seeing Green’s SUV swerving along the roadway as it approached and while Raheem Kaleem slowed down at the side of the road, Green’s SUV collided head-on with the man’s AT 192 car.

The SUV also collided with the truck and the driver along with two other persons sustained injuries as a result. The three men were treated and sent away from the WDRH.
