Plans are in place for the Education Ministry to implement a World Bank-funded programme designed to improve the University of Guyana’s (UG) biodiversity’s capabilities, Education Minister Priya Manickchand has said.

According to a GINA press release, Manickchand indicated that personnel to fill positions such as coordinator, accountant and procurement officer have already been identified. Advertisements for required personnel have been placed in the various media, to fill other posts, she added.

The science and research project is intended to vastly improve UG’s biodiversity capability, through the construction of a fully equipped biodiversity centre, laboratories, and fund feasibility study for the establishment of an International Centre for Biodiversity Research and Low Carbon Development.

The agreement was recently signed by Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh and World Bank representatives, GINA said, and is indicative of government’s efforts to improve capabilities of the nation’s tertiary institution through the following: produce a resurgence in the science curriculum, with a leaning toward the needs of the LCDS; to prop up basic research, in order to advance knowledge on environmental protection and biodiversity preservation; enhance existing laboratory facilities and the infrastructure of the four faculties, inclusive of drainage, internet network, and facilities management.
