National Youth Parliament lauded on opening 12th session

Presidential Adviser on Governance Gail Teixeira yesterday commended the National Youth Parliament (NYP) which opened its 12th sitting, stating that it was no small achievement to be holding sessions for 12 years.

Speaking at the Princess Hotel event, Teixeira said the NYP “demystifies” parliament, shedding light on an aspect of government that is generally not understood. She said it also provides a training ground for aspiring parliamentarians to become familiarized with the procedure of parliament, while at the same time equipping them with life skills. Many past participants have gone on to become prestigious members of financial, political, social and other institutions and organizations, she added, noting that the experience also improves self esteem and general perception of self.

According to Teixeira, these skills will enable the next generation of leaders to “pick up the mantle”, and ensure that democracy remains institutionalized in Guyana, guaranteeing that our democratic framework does not regress.

She spoke of possible considerations of bringing the NYP into Guyana’s Parliament, warning that though it would be a good opportunity, it created the risk of a loss of independence and identity. She also encouraged the NYP to expand and encourage other young people to benefit from what it has to offer.

Speaking before Teixeira, Executive Director of the NYP Kwame McCoy shared a brief history of the organization.

He said participants should be lauded since the NYP calls for hard work, and they have answered that call fully realizing that there is no financial gain to be derived. “The knowledge and experience that one gains as a result of their participation in the NYP is invaluable,” he, however, added.

In addition to its own fund raising schemes, the NYP is supported by a government subvention.

The National Youth Parliament is a forum which seeks to bring together Guyanese young people from all walks of life to discuss issues they believe to be pertinent.
