Man remanded over cocaine found in suitcase at airport

A young man, who was allegedly found with narcotics at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), was yesterday refused bail, when he was brought before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

It is alleged that on September 24, at the CJIA, Shawn Andrew Glasgow of 300 Avenue N, Brooklyn, New York, who said he works with the environmental service, had in his possession a total of 4.106 kilogrammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

Glasgow pleaded not guilty to the offence.

According to the facts, on Monday, the 24-year-old man had checked in on Caribbean Airlines flight BW 524, which was headed to John F Kennedy Airport, NY. Security officials, on checking his suitcase and while passing it through a scanner, saw a strange object, Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield said.

He related that when the relevant authorities checked the suitcase they discovered a whitish substance, suspected to be cocaine concealed in false walls of the suitcase.

Mansfield added that Glasgow was questioned and he denied the accusation. He was arrested after a test was done on the substance and it was weighed amounting to the said quantity.

On Monday, police had said that Glasgow lived at 3015 Hawthorne Ave, Queens and that he was a US citizen.

The prosecution objected to bail citing to the seriousness of the offence.

Glasgow will make his next court appearance on October 3 in court one.
