Ex-employee pleads guilty to stealing from supermarket

A former employee, who was accused of stealing almost $200,000 from the Survival Supermarket, yesterday changed her plea to guilty.

Savitri Ramnauth, 18, of Lot 3 Triumph, East Coat Demerara now awaits sentencing, pending a probation report to the court.

It was alleged that Ramnauth, being employed by Survival Supermarket, stole $198,342 from the place of employment. She had initially pleaded not guilty to the charge of larceny by clerk or servant, after she was arraigned before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court in August. She was placed on $85,000 bail on that occasion.

Yesterday, attorney Paul Fung-a-Fat, who represented Ramnauth, told Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry that his client wanted to pay back the money which was stolen and to plead guilty to the charge.

The magistrate re-read the charge and Ramnauth pleaded guilty.

However, a representative of the supermarket explained that the company did not wish to accept the repayment, saying justice needed to take its course.

The Chief Magistrate subsequently ordered a probation report and the case was adjourned until October 12.
