Porters accused of Hamid’s store theft

Three porters employed by Hamid’s General Store on Regent Street, were on Monday charged with stealing from the store.

Vishan Pestano, 18, of Lot 173 Sunflower Circle, South Ruimveldt, Cohen Fordyce, 27, of Lot 739 ‘C’ Field, South Sophia, and Ryan Harris, 29, of 124 Aubrey Barker Road, South Ruimveldt, were released on $30,000 bail each by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

It is alleged that on October 4, in Georgetown, they stole items that were valued at $56,500 and which belonged to Fazal Hamid.

Prosecutor Winneth Hubbard stated that on the date in question, around 2pm, Harris went into the storage bond, which is situated in the upper flat of the building, and took the articles mentioned in the charge.

Pestano, Hubbard said, then received the items and threw them over the back fence and Fordyce then picked them up.

Hubbard further explained that the men were later contacted and a search was done on Fordyce’s home, where one of the stolen items was discovered. Hubbard said that the men were then taken into custody.

The men denied the charge and bail was granted as the prosecution had no objections.

The case was adjourned until October 22, when it will be called at Court 10.
