Man dies after car slams into Diamond bridge

An accident on the Diamond Public Road, East Bank Demerara yesterday, left one person dead and another injured after the car they were travelling in collided with a bridge.

The accident, which occurred around 11am, resulted in the death of passenger, Doran Keith James, 23 years, of, Adventure, Soesdyke/Linden Highway, the police said in a press release yesterday. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre. Another passenger, Raganauth Mohabir, was admitted to the institution for his injuries.

The release added that James and Mohabir were travelling in motor car, PHH 2376, when the accident occurred. The driver of the car allegedly swerved to avoid collision with a truck that was overtaking a line of vehicles. He then lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the Diamond Bridge.

Eyewitnesses recalled seeing the car attempting to swerve from another vehicle when the driver lost control and crashed into the bridge rail in the vicinity of the Demerara Distillers Limited.

One man said that he heard a loud explosion and when he looked he saw the car in the nearby ditch.

James and Mohabir were then picked up by persons who went to their aid, and rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where James was pronounced dead.
