James, 23, of Adventure, Soesdyke/Linden Highway died in the accident, which occurred around 11 am on Thursday, when the car collided with a bridge.

The accident also resulted in injuries to Raganauth Mohabir. James was pronounced dead on arrival at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre while, Mohabir, was admitted to the institution for his injuries.

James’s mother, Salome Williams, said that she last spoke to her son earlier in the morning when he called her and told her to cook lunch for him.

The woman said she had left her son at home and gone to her other son’s home at Grove, East Bank Demerara, when she received a call from him stating that he was going on the East Coast Demerara to do some work.

James, who was a farmer, told his mother he would stop by on his way back for lunch.

Williams said, “so I said okay, but a little while after somebody call me and tell me he deh in an accident and give me the driver of the car number. So I trying to call the driver and din get through and then another call come and seh he dead.”

The woman said she then rushed to the hospital only to find her son with a big hole to his side lying on a stretcher dead. She said it appeared that the rail from the bridge had pierced him resulting in his death.

James’s mother said that his wife was still trying to come to terms with her husband’s death since he was the breadwinner of the family.

Eyewitnesses recalled seeing the car attempting to swerve from another vehicle when the driver lost control and crashed into the bridge rail in the vicinity of Demerara Distillers Limited.

One man said he heard a loud explosion and when he looked he saw the car in the nearby ditch.

James and Mohabir were then picked up by persons who went to their aid, and rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre.

The police had stated in a press release that James and Mohabir were travelling in motor car, PHH 2376, when the accident occurred. The driver of the car allegedly swerved to avoid a collision with a truck that was overtaking a line of vehicles. He then lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the Diamond Bridge.
