Boy,12, dies after struck down by truck

A 12-year-old boy died on Friday evening after he was hit from his bicycle at D’Urban and Camp streets, by a truck that was allegedly speeding.

Winston Junior Cameron of Lot 40 West Ruimveldt Squatting Area, died on his way to the Georgetown Public Hospital after he was hit by a truck at the corner of, Durban and Camp Streets. Cameron and his older brother were on bicycles heading to their father’s work place at Anira Street, some time after 4 pm when the accident occurred.

The child’s older brother said that he and his brother left their home to go to their father’s place of work and were about to cross D’Urban Street when the truck, GPP 6830, which was travelling at a fast rate, hit Cameron off his bicycle. The child was pitched to the ground and lay helplessly on the road, while his mangled bicycle landed a short distance away.

After the accident, the driver of the truck attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended by persons who saw what had transpired. He was then forced to take the injured child to the hospital for medical treatment but the child died on the way.

The child’s father, Caesar Cameron, said that he was at his work place expecting his children, and after waiting for a while and they did not arrive he became worried. The man said he then received a call from a relative who told him to go to the hospital, so he inquired from the caller if something was wrong with his wife. The caller then informed him that his son was in an accident and had died. The man said when he arrived at the hospital he saw his son with what appeared to be head injuries and a broken leg.

The driver of the truck is in police custody but his relatives have promised to assist the family with the funeral, the Camerons related.
