Bail granted for man on death by dangerous driving charge

A man who was facing a charge of causing death by dangerous driving was granted his pre-trial freedom in the sum of $500,000 at the Weldaad Court on Thursday.

The court heard that on Tuesday October 9, Ramjit Persaud, of Georgetown was driving his Toyota Premio motorcar when it struck and killed Zulfikar ‘Zul’ Alli, 33 a labourer of Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice.

Reports are that Alli was hit at the corner of the pedestrian crossing and suffered injuries to his head. He landed on the bonnet of the car and rolled off about 15 ft away when the driver applied his brakes.

Persaud, a father of one, said to be in 40s was on his way to Rosignol when the accident occurred. He is scheduled to return to court on November 28.

In his application for reasonable bail, defence counsel, Joel Persid Edmond submitted that his client has regretted that a life has been lost. He said too that Persaud could not avoid the accident because the man appeared suddenly in his path.
