More city tour guides being trained

A seminar on City Tour Guide training began yesterday.

Under the theme “Re-Discover Home,’ the Ministry of Tourism, the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) and Wilderness Explorers are conducting the three-day training seminar, which is being hosted at Cara Lodge, on Quamina Street. It is part of a series of initiatives to mark during Tourism Awareness Month 2012, the GTA said.

According to a statement from the GTA, the seminar will see participation from Tourism students from the University of Guyana, staff of the GTA and taxi drivers, among others. The 25 participants will be certified by the GTA upon completion of the training sessions, it added.

GTA’s Director Indranauth Haralsingh was reported as saying that tour guides are significant to tourists’ experience and satisfaction as they help the visitors to understand a little more of the culture and customs of the country. He mentioned Georgetown’s many attractions and rich history and culture. He pledged to work with stakeholders to ensure that capacity building within the sector continues.

During Tourism Awareness Month, there will also be frontline training for Customs and Immigration, a Social Media Marketing Workshop and a GTA/THAG Food Hygiene and Food Security Symposium.
