Parika vendors continue protest against demolition

Dozens of Parika vendors yesterday continued a protest against the removal of their stalls and prevented market committee member Lyndon Fowler, who is the person in charge of the demolition of stalls, from removing some stands.

The protest at Parika went on for several hours yesterday as a number of vendors followed Fowler who made attempts to remove some stalls but was prevented from doing so. One vendor told Stabroek News that they were supported by a number of others and at one point, Fowler “pushed” a woman but they caught her and prevented her from falling.

The woman later made a report to the Parika police station. The vendor told Stabroek News that Fowler had also started to block off the area where their stalls are normally placed but word of his early morning intentions reached them and they mobilized at 4am and faced off and prevented him from doing so.

“The nonsense got to stop,” the vendor said. She said that eventually the barriers were removed and persons were able to resume selling peacefully on the road.

She said that a meeting is planned with Regional Chair-man, Julius Faerber tomorrow and possibly the Minister of Local Government. She added that they are also contemplating legal action.

Vendors from Hydronie and Parika erupted in protest on Friday against the burning of their pallets that were seized by market officials and the threat of the demolition of stalls along the Parika Stelling. Hydronie vendors want to be allowed to sell along the Hydronie market entrance on Sundays only, while those at Parika are asking the authorities to allow them to continue their trade in an area that is conducive to business.
