Accused in gold band snatching remanded

Sherwin Baird, 32, who allegedly snatched a gold band from a woman in the Stabroek Market area, was on Monday remanded to prison.

Baird, 32, of Lot 45 East La Penitence Housing Scheme, was arraigned on the larceny from the person charge before Magistrate Leron Daley at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

It was alleged that on November 15, at Stabroek Market, he stole a $56,000 gold band from the person of Sumandi Mursingh.

Baird pleaded not guilty, but was denied bail after Prosecutor Denise Booker objected to his release. Booker noted that the offence is prevalent in the area and said that persons must be able to walk the streets with their personal items.

The magistrate denied Baird his pre-trial liberty and the case was adjourned to November 9, when it will be called in Court One.
