Man buys pistol and 3-year stay in prison

A man was yesterday sentenced to three years imprisonment after he admitted to buying a pistol with nine rounds of ammunition from a friend.

Police Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick said that on November 17 in Albouystown, Gregory Payne, 42, was spotted by police officers on patrol. They searched him and found a Taurus pistol and nine live rounds.

Bostwick added that Payne was then subsequently arrested and charged with having the weapon and ammunition while not being the holder of a gun licence.

When given the opportunity to speak, Payne said, “I buy it from a friend who had it selling.”

Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, who heard the case, then sentenced Payne to three years imprisonment and imposed a $75,000 fine on him.
