US Southern Baptist medical team providing help

Fifteen medical doctors and pastors from the International Southern Baptist Church in North Carolina, USA are on a week-long intense medical assistance and training programme for religious leaders.

At a welcome service for the team, at the Winners Cathedral, D’urban Street, Lodge on Sunday, Prime Minister Samuel Hinds said government was privileged and grateful for their sacrifice.

“It is important that we have teams such as this one coming to our country, we have the skills and ability, but it is important that people relate to each other because we need people-to-people relations in work to crystallise the saying that the world is one and all humanity is one,” he said.

The prime minister also noted that over the years Guyana has benefited from assistance from various persons and organisations abroad and usually for many of them it is not that they are overflowing with excess funds or time and the nation is appreciative.

“They have other needs too that they can meet so we must recognise that there is some amount of sacrifice in their coming and working with us,” he said, according to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release. Hinds then spoke to the team about Guyana’s cultural diversity, telling them people from all religious persuasions cooperate.

The team will be visiting communities including Buxton, Good Hope and Corentyne, GINA said. A two-day training session was held on Monday and Tuesday for pastors at the Winners Cathedral.
