Lumber yard worker charged with snatching woman’s chain

A lumber yard employee accused of snatching a woman’s gold chain at Stabroek Market was granted $100,000 bail when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court, yesterday.

Travis Nickels of Lot 45 Joseph Pollydore Street, Lodge pleaded not guilty to snatching a gold chain and pendant valued $65,000 from Savitra Singh, when the charge was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry in Court 1.

Police Prosecutor Seon Blackman said that on November 25, Singh was in the Stabroek market when she felt a sudden pull and turned around to see a man walking away with her gold chain and pendant. She raised an alarm and a nearby police patrol responded.

Nickels claimed, “I was in a bus, when a police officer start beating me in ma one eye and pull me out of de bus and tell me about how I snatch some woman gold chain.”

He also alleged, “When he lash me with he gun, he push he hand in ma pockets and take money that is ma boss money.”

The prosecution had objected to bail on the grounds that Nickels didn’t give his address, which he later gave when asked by Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry.

Nickels, who was previously before the court on a charge of threatening language, is required to report to the police station every Friday at 8 am.

The matter will continue on December 17 in Court 1.
